CLAUDE vs CHATGPT vs GEMINI
Honest comparison from someone who uses all three. No one wins overall. Each is best for different things. Here's what to use for what — and why I picked Claude as the daily driver for this 100-day series.
THE 30-SECOND ANSWER
Claude: best for long, careful writing. Best at following constraints. Best at saying "I don't know."
ChatGPT: best for image generation. Largest plugin/tool ecosystem. Best at general "how do I" Q&A.
Gemini: best at Google integration (Gmail, Drive, YouTube). Best for live web info. Best free tier of the three.
If you only use one: any of them works for 80% of tasks. The real win is using each for what it's best at.
WHERE CLAUDE WINS
- Long documents (1M token context — more than anyone)
- Following nuanced instructions ("don't use em dashes," "match this tone")
- Code generation + debugging
- Following constraints over time (less likely to drift mid-conversation)
- Saying "I'm not sure" instead of fabricating
- Custom skills + connectors
WHERE CHATGPT WINS
- Image generation (DALL-E built in)
- Plugins / GPT marketplace (custom GPTs everywhere)
- Voice conversations (more natural-sounding voice mode)
- General knowledge (slightly broader recall)
- Specific integrations (Excel, certain enterprise tools)
WHERE GEMINI WINS
- Google Workspace integration (Gmail/Drive/Docs/Calendar) — native
- Real-time information (deeper Google Search integration)
- YouTube comprehension (analyze videos directly)
- Free tier (most generous of the three)
- Image search + generation (decent at both)
MY HONEST DAILY USAGE
After 6+ months of using all three:
- Claude: ~70% of my time. Writing, planning, code, anything that needs careful following of instructions. This is my daily driver.
- ChatGPT: ~20%. Image generation. Quick "how does X work" questions. Voice chats while walking.
- Gemini: ~10%. Anything that needs to be very current (news, real-time research). Pulling from my Google docs without setup.
For this 100-day series, I'm focused on Claude because it's the platform with the deepest skill ecosystem and the most powerful customization for non-developers.
WHEN TO SWITCH
Switch to ChatGPT when:
- You need an image generated
- You want a voice conversation
- A specific custom GPT does exactly what you need
Switch to Gemini when:
- You need today's news / current events
- You want to analyze a YouTube video
- You're doing heavy work in Google Docs/Sheets
Stay with Claude when:
- You're doing long-form writing
- You're working on code
- You need it to follow careful constraints
- You're using your installed skills
THE HONEST UNCOMFORTABLE TAKE
Most people use ChatGPT because it was first. Familiarity isn't a reason to stay. Try Claude for 2 weeks for the same tasks. If it's better for your work, switch. If it's not, that's fine — go back. Either way you'll know.
This series gives you 100 reasons to test that theory.
WHAT'S NEXT
Day 6 of 100. Tomorrow: Day 7 — The First-Skill Picker (the diagnostic that tells you which of the 100 skills to install first).
SAFETY CHECK
Same as Day 1.
