WHAT IS CLAUDE (IN 30 SECONDS)
Skip the marketing. Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic that's good at writing, reasoning, coding, and following nuanced instructions. Better than ChatGPT for some things, worse for others. Here's the honest 30-second take.
THE 30-SECOND ANSWER
Claude is an AI you talk to like a smart, careful assistant. You type or speak. It writes back. It can read documents you paste, look at images you attach, search the web (in some plans), and remember things across conversations (if you turn that on).
It's made by Anthropic — a company started by ex-OpenAI researchers who wanted to focus on AI safety.
The headline difference from ChatGPT: Claude is generally better at long, careful work (long documents, complex code, nuanced writing) and at following constraints (your tone, your rules, what NOT to do).
That's it. That's Claude.
WHAT IT IS GOOD AT
- Writing in your voice (especially with the right setup)
- Reading long documents — books, contracts, transcripts (1M tokens of context — about 750,000 words)
- Code generation + debugging
- Following multi-step instructions without losing the plot
- Saying "I don't know" when it doesn't know (most other AIs make stuff up more)
WHAT IT IS NOT GOOD AT
- Real-time information without the web search feature on
- Generating images (Claude does text + reads images; for image generation, use a different tool)
- Deep math beyond high-school level (use a calculator or a math-specialist tool)
- Knowing things that happened after its training cutoff (varies by model — usually a few months ago)
- Always being right — it hallucinates sometimes (Day 22 covers how to catch this)
THE 5 THINGS PEOPLE DO WITH IT MOST
Based on what I see in my DMs:
- Email + writing help — drafting, editing, rewriting in different tones
- Research + summarization — paste a long thing, ask for the gist or specific insights
- Brainstorming + thinking partner — work through a problem out loud
- Coding + automation — for technical users, replaces a lot of Stack Overflow
- Personal assistant tasks — meal plans, schedules, lists, reminders
You'll likely start with #1 or #2.
HOW TO TRY IT TODAY (2 minutes)
- Open claude.ai
- Sign up with Google or email (free)
- Type: "I'm new to Claude. Tell me 3 things you can do well that I might not know about. Plain English."
- Read what comes back
That's it. You've used Claude.
WHAT'S NEXT
Day 2 of 100. Tomorrow: Day 3 — Claude.ai vs Claude Code: which one for you.
SAFETY CHECK
Same as Day 1.
